Poppop, a.k.a. “The Mayor of Grand Oaks”

On Tuesday,  Mom and I attended a party for new residents at Grand Oaks in The Commons.  When the director introduced the new residents to the community, everyone already knew Tony Culotta, or, as I call him, “The Mayor of Grand Oaks.” Also, one of Poppop’s hallmates (who happens to be a woman – we know how he has become a ladies’ man), has dubbed him as “The Troublemaker.”  Since most people acknowledged him as Tony, Dr. Culotta, or “The Troublemaker,” it seems to me that he has found his niche!

Both the party’s cuisine and decorations had a Middle Eastern flair.  Sitting around the red-beaded candles and eating baklava, hummus, and falafel, the residents mingled while waiting for the afternoon entertainment.  Amina, a belly dancer, was expected to perform that day, but she was stuck in traffic.  While the residents saw it as more time to eat and chat, one woman shouted, “Well, if she’s late, why can’t we have a male belly dancer in here?”  Unfortunately, Mom was out of the room for this moment, but Henrietta and I laughed hysterically.  Maybe at the next new resident party, there will be a male belly dancer just for this woman.

Amina sure could dance!  Both of her parents were Egyptian, which is how she developed an interest in belly dancing.  I do not have any pictures, but can verify that her costume was exquisite and that she can move!

Poppop was not very interested in the belly dancing performance, but rather to see his friends.  Because he is comfortable with his new surroundings, Poppop has lost his guard, in my opinion.  Henrietta said that she pinches or pokes Poppop whenever he talks badly about someone, such as someone else’s nose (not like he is one to talk with his Italian nose)!  Even though gossping is impolite, I think it is sure sign that he has become situated.  As we all know, he is very good at striking up conversation with new people, which is why he has become “The Mayor of Grand Oaks!”

Like all of us,  I am very happy to see that he has become settled at Grand Oaks, or as I call it, his apartment in the city!  Hopefully, the next time you visit Poppop, you will see as entertaining of a performance as I did.  Who knows – maybe there will be a male belly dancer?!

  • Maybe Pop Pop will be the belly dancer if this rep holds up! I loved this post! Sounds like he’s doing great. When do you take off? School’s been busy, and now we are off to “The Cape” for the weekend! Thanks for the great post.

  • Hi David! I leave for Elon tomorrow. Classes start on Tuesday, so I will have a few days to settle in and have some fun before I hit the books! Have fun at the wedding! I’ll write another post in the near future.
