A good comptuer is hard to find, and so is a good deal. So when Bridget and I were looking for computers to start off our school years, we were looking for the best bang for our buck. We both found them in Apple.
Planned obsolescence is a problem for all computer users. Most PCs will last 4 years max before they crash out–Meghan’s is on her last legs, and after college she’s also decided to go Mac too. (Mark was the first trailblazer, and is the brand’s number one cheerleader). While more expensive in the short run, Apple seems to offer more satisfaction and fewer costs in the long run. Here’s why.
First, Apples are far less prone to crashing and contracting viruses. Margot and Kathy both share computer repairmen who clean their computers routinely…for a fee. While their services are good, virus protection is inversely proportional to computer usability. That said, the best virus protection = a slower computer. Your package basically takes up all your working memory just to protect you from threats. Most Mac users don’t need virus protection. 90% of the viruses out there are made for PCs. Even if your Mac contracts one of these viruses, it can’t do anything to the system which is different from windows.
Not only do Mac users save money on Anti-virus programs, but they also save on added programs. Macs come ready to go whereas PC users need to purchase a variety or programs after their initial purchase to have them functioning the way they want. The extra money one spends on a Mac in the beginning is ultimately made up by a PC user after all the needed software is purchased later. It’s really six and one half donzen.
In addition to no virus hassle and long term price, most computer companies offer deals for education, but Apple’s is extra attractive. If you’re a student or work in education, (Ann, you would qualify too), you are eligble for discounts–$100 off the system and a free Ipod Touch after mail in rebate. The later item might sound superfluous, but actually it’s a pretty useful tool for a college student or a professional. Not only does it have wiFi Internet access for no charge, but it also has features like a calendar, contact list, and GPS system included, functioning like a PDA organizer. For those who fear a entering information into a tiny screen, all of that information can by synced from the computer itself. It’s a great gadget to have.
Finally, from a family standpoint, Apple’s built in cameras offer the ability to communicate via video chat–seeing your loved one and talking to them for free, even when they are miles away.
Most of us are not in the market for a new computer, but if you find yourself there, consider a Mac. The payoffs are great.
